Third World America

Suzanne Showers at the Washington Speakers Bureau, an organization designed to connect you with the greatest speakers on the planet for your next event sent me a quick note asking if I’d be interested in receiving a copy of Arianna Huffington’s latest release.  The title of this post mirrors the title of Arianna’s most recent release; Third World America.

Third World America is a page turner in the most depressing, startling, and real sense of the expression.  Being born and spending many quote on quote vacations in a third world country it’s hard to fathom America depicted as such. Arianna describes the symptoms she sees that’s lead America to be on the verge of being characterized as a third world economy. Her thesis is very real and her examples relevant. Within the last fifty pages of the novel you see a sense of hope emerge – the silver lining that’s always been the guiding spirit we see in American patriotism.

What struck me about Third World America is the concept of an inflection point. Arianna quotes President Obama, “a rare inflection point in history where the size and scope of the challenges before us require that we remake our world to renew its promise.”  The inflection point here describes our survival focused past bridging to our meaning focused future – leaving the reader to ask what this remade world will look like.

Are we truly know driven by meaning and purpose opposed to our survival instincts, adapt at all costs innate human behaviour?  Chime in on the discussion at Arianna’s Huffington Post.
